Sleep Problems

Just like we need water and food to survive, we also need sleep. Sleep can be influenced by circadian rhythms, hormonal, and environmental factors. It is a restorative process that gives us energy for the day ahead of us. It gives the body a chance to repair muscles and other tissues and gives the brain a chance to organize and archive your memories.

Insomnia
Our bodies have an internal, natural clock which promotes a regular sleep cycle but when this cycle is disturbed, this is where the person experiences insomnia. The definition of insomnia is the difficulty in initiating and/or maintaining sleep.

The effects of sleep deprivation are cumulative and have profound effects on memory, learning, reasoning, reaction, energy, and ability to focus and concentrate.  It has been found that many children who were labeled ADHD were actually sleep deprived children.  Adult sleep deprivation can have a negative impact on family, society, and the workplace. In addition sleep deprivation is a contributing factor to depression and anxiety.

Sleep is dependent upon all types of brain waves functioning properly.  To initiate sleep, the theta and alpha waves must fire.  To get into deep sleep states, the delta waves must predominate.  Each of these brain waves is responsible for the production of neurotransmitters that fascilitate the sleep process.

Managing Sleep Deprivation
Most people don’t seek formal treatment from their physician and try over-the-counter sleep aids but such medication aren’t effective for long periods of time and gradually people become tolerant to it or worse, becoming addicted to taking the sleeping aids. We at BrainCore have found that most sleep deprivation is caused by brainwave imbalance.  The dysregulated brainwave makes it hard for people to fall asleep and/or stay asleep due to the inability of the brain to slow down.  BrainCore Therapy is directed at teaching the patient how to slow down the brainwave patterns making it easier for the patient to fall asleep.
